GameMat.eu - Battle mats and Pre-painted resin terrain

Review: Jakub Polkowski

6 x 4 Battle mats

Welcome to another product review.
Let's travel back into the past. It is the year 2015 and I am going to buy my first gaming mat. After LONG research I am choosing a Sands of Time mat from the Gamemat.eu. I repaint bases of my whole Space Marines chapter of the White Panthers(over 200 minis…). My brand new side project - a 750pts Waaagh(hahahah!!) was also getting the bases that will match that mat as well.

Since then this single mat has been used in countless battles, many tournaments and what is most important - 6 battle reports posted on this website.

The most recent Warhammer 40k 4th edition battle report - Tyranid vs Orks was played od Sands of time.

This is a photo from the first battle report on this website. Those are the times when the 7th edition was the current one!

Another 7th edition battle report. An amazingly painted army of the Grey Knights was facing Orks.

I did not treat her too kindly, to be honest, and what might surprise you is that it still looks like a brand new one. After 9 years of such heavy usage! This should tell you a lot about the quality of the products from the gamemat.eu.

Recently I reached out to gamemet.eu and they were kind enough to send me 3 more mats and 2 sets of their pre-terrains to review. I was meant to do this much sooner but it is how it is.

The mats that I was given are:

All of them have prints on one side and are rubber-based just like a mousepad and have the only valid size for me - 48x72 inches, which makes them usable in almost any tabletop game.

Let’s talk about the design of the printed patterns. The print quality is exceptional. Simply stunning. Period. There are so many beautiful details that playing on them with painted minis brings this hobby to another level.

I know that images are worth a thousand words, so just have a look!

Orks on Fallout Zone mat.

Army of the Dirandis tribe (Argatoria) on Highlands in War mat.

Army of the Witch Hunters on the Lost World mat.

The Fallout Zone mat with terrain from the Octarius box.

The visual results are easy to see with the naked eye but there is something more that people who do photos/battle reports will appreciate. The mats are not glossy, which makes taking photos/videos so much easier.

There is one more aspect that should be mentioned. The noise. One thing that I do not like when I attend events is the noise of dice hitting the tables. A full-day event when there are no mats on the tables almost always ends with a headache for me. But such thick mats reduce this incredibly well - to the level that it is no issue anymore.
This is a small thing but in the long run, this is one of the greatest advantages over the latex mats for me.

What more can I say? I simply recommend them. Just look how awesome they are with 28mm games but also 10mm scale, represented by miniatures from the Argatoria range:

Upcoming battle report - Gaeldor vs Dirandis.

Photoshoot with a mobile phone from the local club game day.

The upcoming battle reports will be recorded on those mats, so stay tuned!

But that is not everything!
I was given the 2 sets of the pre-painted terrain that were designed to fit into the wars taking place in the grim far future:

Those sets are big. Each of them is more than enough to fill the battlefield BUT if you have more than one, then You can add some variety to your table by mixing those sets:

I have to be honest - I am not a huge fan of resin terrains because they are really heavy(you can treat them as a throwing weapon for self-defense) and tend to break quite easily. But to my surprise - that is not the case with those sets. The first thing I did with them was deploy them on the 40k event, and they ended up without a single scratch! Nice!

They are pre-painted and I see elements that I will for sure paint to add more details/weathering effects but we have to answer one question. Should the terrain be painted better/on the same level as minis? Or should they be a background? Personally - I am torn between those options. On the one hand, I have plastic sets from Octarius, which have thousands of details that distract readers from the minis, and on the other hand we could have neat pieces that make a perfect background for the minis to shine. Which is better?

Well… You are to decide when new battle reports will appear!

The last thing I would like to mention is prices.
The costs of a single mat is 69 EUR. The Chem-Zone Set 2 costs 155 EUR and the Industrial Set costs 129 EUR.
Is this expensive? Well... When it comes to money the answer is always - it depends.
I always try to ask myself a question - how much time it would cost me and how long it would take to build terrain on such level? In my case, it is a better option to buy ready products. Thanks to that I have more time to paint and play.
Besides - a box of 10 Primaris Intercessors cost 50EUR...

BUT THERE IS A GOOD NEWS!

Gamemat.eu decided to give a special discount code for all readers of Battle-Reports.org -13%. The code is JP13 and it can be used from today!
